Toronto exhales: Olivia Chow stays mayor, but the margin gives pause

After a race that stayed tight to the end, Olivia Chow has clearly won Toronto's mayoral election. Her supporters are relieved, while critics read the roughly 41 percent for Brad Bradford as a warning.

What happened

Olivia Chow has been confirmed as mayor of Toronto. With almost all polls reporting she had about 54 percent of the vote, against about 41 percent for her challenger, councillor Brad Bradford. With 87 percent of polls in, she led by more than 113,000 votes. Polls had seen the race tightening sharply in the final days, one even with Bradford narrowly ahead.

Chow campaigned on everyday relief: cheaper transit rides, free after ten trips a week, half the property tax for local grocery stores and a crackdown on price gouging. Bradford argued the city was not living up to its potential. Long lines delayed the first results until around 9 p.m., and eleven polling stations stayed open longer.

In the surrounding region, the outcomes differed: in Mississauga incumbent Carolyn Parrish lost to Alvin Tedjo, and mayors were also voted out in Niagara Falls and Clarington.

The mood on the ground

In the mayor's camp, relief dominated the night. On social media, supporters hailed the win as a vote for a kind and sensible course, as Yahoo News Canada recounts.

But the joy is muted. One widely shared reaction said, in essence, that it had been too close and asked whether Chow would learn from it. That around four in ten voters backed the challenger gives some supporters pause too. Bradford's campaign also drew words of respect.

The National Post reads the result soberly: Chow won by promising not to break anything, but also not to fundamentally fix anything. The status quo lacked a stirring story, yet it prevailed while incumbents fell elsewhere in Ontario.
