Soweto
South Africa's largest township in south-western Johannesburg and a symbol of resistance to apartheid.
The name stands for South Western Townships. Soweto was laid out under apartheid as a residential area for Black people; the student uprising of 16 June 1976 made it world-famous. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both lived on Vilakazi Street.
